To our surprise the beginning and ends of the parade were some of the most exciting moments where the carvalãos lifted people in and out of the air in boxes suspended by a single cable. The scene was that of a seemingly disorganized sport with a million rules that made no sense, and yet worked. As each float made its way under the last highway overpass, their heights were extended one last time, one feather more.
At the end of the parade, with equal speed and unruliness, the floats disassembled to make their way back to their warehouse. The ending was a little congested with a few bumper to bumpers as the revelers were lifted into swinging cranes and brought back down to the ground. The snarl of it all was mesmerizing and despite its frenetic nature, no one seemed to get hurt.
